Angel

“My confidence has gone through the roof. I feel great. I wake up in the morning and I’m just happy. It’s a whole new transformation.”

She’s Hired!

With a career in a male-dominated field, Angel* felt like she’d proven herself over and over again. She spent years doing field work on trains, slowly working her way up, even gaining a promotion that brought her to the Phoenix area. By every external measure, she was succeeding. But something wasn’t adding up.

“I felt really static,” Angel shared. “I was so ready to leave my job. I want to get into the field, be hands-on, and get to work.”

Angel knew she wanted something technical, with room to grow, and would let her build with her hands. But in today’s job market, she didn’t know where to even begin looking for her new dream career.

The answer laid right within her own home.

Angel’s girlfriend recently took Fresh Start’s Techie Lab and Angel joined her at the Celebration of Success, a ceremony to celebrate graduates of Fresh Start programs.

Angel wasn’t expecting much, but the sounds of community and stories of women becoming who they want to be inspired her.

“I heard everyone speaking and it felt so good. I wanted to be a part of it. I didn’t know what I was going to do yet, but I wanted to do something.”

Angel went home that night and immediately started looking into programs available through Fresh Start. When she saw the semiconductor technician program they offered, something clicked. Arizona’s semiconductor industry was growing fast, and that kind of technical, hands-on work was exactly what she’d been looking for, and with real upward mobility attached to it.

“When I saw semiconductor, I thought, ‘This is always something I wanted to try, and this is the opportunity to try it.’”

Angel was ready to seize the moment, and even better, she convinced her girlfriend to do the program with her.

“I like computers, you like computers. Let’s do it.” Her girlfriend agreed: “Let’s do it.”

They started in March 2025, and the course was more comprehensive than she anticipated. It covered more than just semiconductor manufacturing. They learned about HVAC, vacuum flow, and schematics. The curriculum moved quickly, and Angel was doing all of it while still working full-time.

Angel’s daily schedule was rigorous: up at 4:00am for work, off at 2:00pm, a brief window with her girlfriend to eat and decompress, sometimes sitting in the Fresh Start parking lot, then class from 4:00pm to 8:00pm every evening for three weeks straight.

“[At first] I was feeling overwhelmed. I had the slight thought that I was going to mess something up because it was so much.”

Angel’s program instructor noticed her struggling, pulled her aside and encouraged her. You’ve got everything. Don’t worry about it. She learned the best way to take notes and process what was coming at her and the overwhelming feelings started to lift.

Angel and her girlfriend moved through the material together, flash cards spread between them, pushing each other forward.

“Whatever I couldn’t understand, she did, and vice versa. We worked well together.”

By the end of the program, Angel had missed just one question out of 100 on her final exam. Her personal transformation went far beyond the test score.

She completed the program with a polished resume, a sharper elevator pitch, and a network of mentors and peers that she didn’t have before.

“Fresh Start provided the motivation, and I still have that feeling I had the first time I came here. That love-type feeling,” Angel shared. “I don’t have family out here, and it’s good to know I can always call Fresh Start and have a conversation.”

Angel has already directed other women in her life, that she knows feel stagnant in their jobs, towards Fresh Start.

“Fresh Start is the best place for a woman, I promise you.”

When Angel thinks about women standing where she once stood, working in a job that doesn’t fit, she hopes they don’t give up their search.

“Even when you think you can’t, you can’t give up. You keep going. If you really want it and you have that drive to want something better in life, you can’t give up.”

These days, Angel wakes up happy. The feeling of being stuck is gone.

“My confidence has gone through the roof. I feel great. It’s a whole new transformation.”

She’s Hired!

After graduating from the Semiconductor Technician program, Angel secured a job as a Security Guard at NXP, a global semiconductor company in Phoenix. With her foot in the door, she plans to work her way up in one of the fastest-growing industries in the state.
